EESL Successfully Completes a Decade of
Helping India Become Energy Efficient

EESL, completed 10 years of scaling up energy efficiency programmes in India and globally. Established in 2009 to unlock the potential of energy efficiency, initiatives implemented by EESL have cumulatively
led to energy savings of over 58 billion kWh and a reduction of over 46 million tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the globe.
In its 10 years, EESL has had an exponential growth, with offices spread across India, UK, Middle East, South Asia and South-East Asia. EESL’s revenue has grown at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 114.96
per cent from INR 26 crore in FY 2013-14 to INR 2565 crore in FY 2018-19. With its rapid growth, EESL now aims to become INR 10,000-crore company in the next three years.

Singh felicitated previous Chairmen and CEOs of EESL for their contribution in organisation’s growth and expansion. The ceremonial event was also graced by Shri

Conference on “Integrated Energy Efficiency

To share the learnings of EESL’ a conference on “Integrated Energy Efficiency Solutions for Industries” organized by EESL in association with PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry under the aegis of Global
Environment Facility (GEF) project “Creating & Sustaining markets for Energy Efficiency”. This conference is supported by Global Environment Facility (GEF)” United Nations Development Program (UNEP)”
Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Key objectives of the conference:
This conference is planned to disseminate information about the National Motor Replacement Program (NMRP), latest techniques and advancements in the field of energy management, provide information on latest
energy saving ideas, develop participants to create innovative energy saving ideas through actual implemented case studies and highlight managerial skills required to sustain energy conservation activities.
Also case studies shared so that to have a first-hand information about how energy conservation projects are successfully implemented by leading organisation.

Programme (UNEP) ‘Supporting E-Mobility in India – Uttar

Energy Efficiency Services Limited and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a leading global environmental authority, jointly concluded a yearlong project to ‘Support
E-Mobility in India – Uttar
Pradesh,. The final validation workshop was conducted on 30th January 2020 with 70+ officers and representatives from various government and private organizations in New Delhi. This project has supported
faster adoption and facilitate the implementation of UP EV manufacturing and mobility policy
2019. In the validation workshop, there was e-Launch of charging station installed in Noida by Ms Ritu Maheshwari, CEO Noida Authority. The draft project report “Supporting Electric Mobility in Uttar
Pradesh: Charging Infrastructure and Business Models
also launched during the Validation Workshop.
The day long workshop witnessed interactive sessions on themes such as supporting global efforts to promote electric mobility, GEF 7 India electric mobility project and how it can support Uttar Pradesh, business
models for EV charging stations & case studies of delivery models and city-led development for EV charging infrastructure. The workshop was attended by key experts, stakeholders from government departments,
private organizations, academicians, consultants, think tanks etc. in an interactive environment and delineated the focus areas for the state in terms of policy and implementation to provide impetus to the
EV uptake in the region.
EESL and UNEP have together planned for a provision of consultancy services to aid the development of policy framework, design and implementation of charging infrastructure projects and thus support the large-scale
adoption and roll out of electric vehicles in Uttar Pradesh.

International Symposium to Promote Innovation & Research in
Energy Efficiency (INSPIRE 2019) kicked off in Mumbai. The two-day symposium is being organised by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) in association
with The World Bank (WB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and World Resources Institute, India (WRI India). Based on the theme of Innovation, INSPIRE
2019 honoured five pathbreaking innovations in clean energy and energy efficiency as part of the second edition of #InnovateToINSPIRE challenge, a first-of-its-kind energy innovation challenge.

Dedication of 1 crore LED Street Lights to the

Under the Government of India’s Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP), Hon’ble Minister of State (IC) for Power, New & Renewable Energy, Shri R.K. Singh dedicated 1 crore smart LED streetlights to the
nation, that are illuminating 2.7 lakh Kms of roads in India. It is the world’s largest streetlight replacement programme, which is being implemented by the Energy Efficiency Services Limited .The 1 crore
smart LED streetlights have been installed in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, West Bengal,
Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tripura, Telangana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Pondicherry, Port Blair, Lakshadweep and Rajasthan, helping generate employment
for around 13000 people in the country.
The installation of 1 crore LED streetlights has resulted in annual energy savings of 6.71 billion kWh and avoided 1,119.40 MW of peak demand, resulting in reduction of GHG emission by 4.63 million tCO2 every
By March 2020, SLNP aims to replace 1.34 crore conventional streetlights in India with smart LEDs. This ambitious goal will make a tremendous difference, enabling peak demand reduction of about 1500 MW, annual
energy savings of 9 billion kWh, and reduction in 6.2 Million tons of CO2 per year. EESL has an ambitious plan in this portfolio for next 4-5 years where it intends to bring investment to the tune
of INR 8000 crores by 2024 by covering entire Rural India. It is expected that more than 30 million LED streetlights would be retrofitted/installed by EESL.

Hon’ble Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Government of West Bengal, Shri Firhad Hakim dedicated 60,000 LED streetlights, as part of the Green City Mission of Government of West Bengal, to
the people of the state. These LED streetlights are being installed in the district of Bankura, Beldanga, Budge Budge and Khorda by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) with following objective:
EESL signed MoU with NOIDA to promote EVs and
install around 100 charging stations
Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority (NOIDA) to promote electric vehicles and install around 100
public charging stations. The MoU will fast-track the adoption of e-mobility in NOIDA by promoting robust EV infrastructure.
Shri Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director, EESL and Smt. Ritu Maheshwari, CEO, NOIDA signed the MoU in the august presence of Shri Alok Tandon, Chairman NOIDA
EESL will make the entire upfront investment on services pertaining to the MoU along with the operation and maintenance of public charging infrastructure by qualified manpower. NOIDA would be responsible for
provision of space, and requisite power connection for the charging infrastructure. The initiative is estimated to save over 4.04 tonnes of CO2 emissions per e-car per year.
Workshop on successful demonstration of first
technology under GEF-5 Project in Surat, Gujarat 22 May, 2019
Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India, conducted a technology dissemination
workshop on ‘Energy Efficient Technologies for the Surat (Textile) Cluster’ in the city. The workshop demonstrated the replacement of reciprocating air compressor with a VFD enabled screw compressor
with permanent magnet motor. The technology has an investment potential to the tune of about Rs. 20 Cr in Surat Cluster, with electrical energy saving potential of about 11 million units, resulting in a
2 emission reduction of about 9900 tonnes per year in the cluster. This is one of the five technologies identified for the cluster.

India has significant ambitions for energy security and sustainability. By 2030, India aims to reduce its emissions target to 33-35 percent – amongst the highest across developing countries – and increase the
share of non-fossil fuel-based electricity to 40 percent.
To reach these sustainability targets, newer technologies and approaches need to be implemented. As a nation, India has achieved significant strides both in renewable generation and adopting energy efficiency,
with renewables constituting 8 percent of the total domestic grid, and the nation’s energy intensity declining by 58 percent between 2005-06 and 2015-16.
However, the effectiveness in both these arenas is inhibited by several specific challenges. Although a clean form of energy, renewables provide intermittent electricity access and therefore expose transmission
grids to risks of collapse. Energy consumption in India is expected to increase by 165 percent by 2040, but adoption of energy efficient alternatives is limited to specific appliances and institutions with
minimal support for risk-sharing by financial institutions.
The intervention potential for targeted innovations – technologies, processes and business models that can sustain clean energy supply and responsible consumption while balancing development ambitions – is not
only significant, but a critical need as developing nations like India bear the brunt of the burden of climate change action.

International Day of Yoga – 2018

International Day of Yoga -2018 presents an occasion for all organizations devoted to the promotion of Yoga to come forward and spread the message about the rewards of regular practice of yoga among the
general public. Every individual stands to gain from the regular practice of yoga through long term benefits in health, happiness and well being.
Common Yoga Protocol (CYP)
We all know that the thrust of the IDY observation on 21st June is on harmonious mass yoga demonstrations in which millions of people participate around the globe, at thousands of venues. When participation
of people is on such a massive scale, there has to be some serious planning behind it, if the demonstration is to be in harmony. Some of the most accomplished yoga gurus of India came together to address
this issue. They developed the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) for this purpose, which is essentially a specified sequence of Yoga Asanas of 45 minutes duration.
The Asanas and practices forming part
of the CYP are selected in such a way as to yield the maximum health & wellbeing rewards to a diverse group of people from different profiles of health, age etc.

The South-South Knowledge Exchange (SSKE) Program in Energy Efficiency (EE) is designed as a collaborative platform to provide opportunities to South Asia Region (SAR) countries for knowledge exchange and learning
in order to enhance their capacity to deliver energy efficiency (EE) and Demand Side Management (DSM) programs in their respective countries. The program aims to enhance greater connectivity between the
community of the World Bank Group (WBG)’s energy efficiency practitioners and country stakeholders from across the SAR countries with the key players in Korea’s energy efficiency industry and community,
led by the Korea Energy Agency (KEA) and in India, led by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). The overall emphasis of the knowledge exchange is on financing,
implementation and delivery of energy efficiency. The project is funded by the Korea-World Bank Partnership Facility (KWPF).

The Government of India has launched Gram Swaraj Abhiyan, to promote social harmony and apprise rural communities of various government welfare schemes and initiatives. The campaign will be implemented between 14th April and 5th May 2018 in 16000 villages
As part of this initiative, 16000 Indian villages with a significantly large number of low-income households will be able to buy LED bulbs for a special price of Rs. 50 under the Unnat Jyoti By Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) programme. The LED bulbs
will equip homes with energy-efficient, cost-effective lighting, and higher lumen output than conventional incandescent bulbs.
The initiative was inaugurated by flagging off the UJALA vans across India. Overall 1300 vans will travel across 16000 villages in the country spreading awareness about energy efficiency, energy conservation and distributing the LED bulbs. The LED bulbs
to be distributed in this period will have the logo of Gram Swaraj Abhiyan on the boxes.
Launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, UJALA programme promotes energy conservation by increasing the use of energy-efficient LED lighting at residential level. Implementing the UJALA programme, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Super
ESCO under the administrative control of Ministry of Power, Government of India, has distributed superior quality LED bulbs to domestic consumers, enabling them to achieve energy saving of up to 90 percent,
in comparison to incandescent bulbs.

Global Environment Facility – 6 (GEF 6)
“Creating & Sustaining Markets for Energy Efficiency” And
“District Energy in Cities”

partnered with Global Environment Facility (GEF), which has provided
a grant of around $20 million to enable EESL to play a leading role
in India’s transformational shift towards a low-emission economy,
focusing on energy efficiency. This project, “Creating and
Sustaining Markets for Energy Efficiency” brings together a number
of technical and financing partners, including United Nations
Environment (UNEP), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the German KfW
under a $ 430 million package, which aims to mitigate 60 million
tons of CO 2eq total direct energy savings of 38.3 million GJ by
2022 and 137.5 million GJ by 2032.

GEF-5 (Global Environment Facility-5)
Promoting Market Transformation for Energy Efficiency in Micro, Small
The GEF-5 project focuses on improving energy efficiency in the MSME industrial sector of India via continued capacity building, information dissemination, and establishment of standard operating procedures
for implementing energy efficiency (EE) investment projects. Due to the evolving needs of the market, the Indian Government and UNIDO have decided that it will be more beneficial to the sector to change
the focus of support mechanisms for energy efficiency in the MSME industry in order to stimulate longer-term sustainable change in market mechanisms and behaviour.
To be more precise, the overall project objective is to promote the implementation of energy efficiency in the MSME sector; to create and sustain a revolving fund mechanism to ensure replication of energy efficiency
measures in the sector; and to address the identified barriers for scaling-up energy efficiency measures and consequently promote a cleaner and more competitive MSME industry in India. Here, GEF being the
funding agency has partnered with UNIDO as implementing body, Ministry of MSME as leading executing agency and EESL as the main Executing partner, in order to achieve the desired objective in a time span
of 36 months. Total cost reserved for this project is 31.3million USD.
The proposed project has 3 substantive components:
Incomponent 1, a total of 10 energy intensive clusters have already beenidentified based on the mentioned objective criteria. The list of the clustersshortlisted include- Jodhpur-Limestone, Varanasi-Brick Kiln,
Vapi-Chemical & Dyes, Surat- Textile,Morbi-Ceramic, Vellore-Rice Mill, Jorhat-Tea, Odisha-Sponge Iron, andBatala/Jalandhar/ Ludhiana-Casting & Forging and Pali Textile cluster.Also, 33 technologies
have been singled out that have maximum impact on thecluster as a whole.
Forcomponent 2, the project will short-list 100 LSPs and unit level technicalpersonnel in installation, operations and maintenance of the technologiesdemonstrated. This will be done through cluster level workshops
on thetechnologies being demonstrated and a LSP coordination mechanism shall beestablished through the PMU. Furthermore, a peer to peer network will beestablished to analyze and validate the energy savings
information from thedemonstration projects. This network will include local technology experts,LSPs, representatives of MSME Associations at the cluster level, etc. This willnot only enhance the credibility
of the results, but also foster informationexchange amongst industrial enterprises and encourage new enterprises. The networkwill be an interactive platform managed by the EESL PMU engaged experts.Results
from the project demonstrations will be developed into case studies andshared through the established network. The network will also be used to enlistMSME units for replication and scaling up activities.
What’s more- MSME units will be shortlisted to implementtechnology demonstration of the identified technologies. The units will beselected based on their availability and willingness to share technicaland
commercial data, provide access to other units for technologiesimplemented, etc. The demonstration will include customization of thetechnologies to suit the requirements of the units. The demonstration oftechnology
shall involve replacing the energy inefficient systems with the mostenergy efficient system. Following the demonstration activities, EESL willaggregate the demand with a target to reach out to about 400
units in theclusters where implementation of technical proposals is possible. Theinvestments in these units will be done by EESL through its own funds (equityfrom its own sources) or commercial loans from
SIDBI and/or other banks, or byan ESCO which will be arranged/facilitated by EESL with financial assistancefrom schemes of the Ministry of MSME.
In the final component i.e. 3, sustainable and effective financing mechanismswill be established to support the replication of Energy Efficiency projects inMSMEs. In order to achieve this objective, officials
from government agencies(Ministry of MSME, MOEF, MOP, etc.) and private banks/financial institutionswill be sensitized on promoting EE equipment and trained on evaluating andinvesting in industrial EE projects.
And, to ensure that the replication of theEE projects in the MSME sector continues beyond the GEF project, a RevolvingFund will be set up to sustain the activity. The EESL MSME Revolving Fund(EMRF) will
be seeded with the GEF grant, to be disbursed to industrial MSMEUnits and will be accredited by a portion of the returns that EESL will receivefrom implementing the project. The objective of this model will
be to reducethe transaction costs of MSME units, to be undertaken by the SMEIP-E; for this,financial arrangements with FIs/banks will be worked out by EESL. The modelswill work on the principle of “Pay-As-You-Save”
(PAYS) where regular paymentsto EESL/ESCO will be done by the units after installation of the technology.
Presently, 7 Baseline Surveys , 5 videographic studies have be conductedin the shortlisted clusters. The sole purpose of these studies was to capturethe present scenario and the pulse of the industry for the
upcoming project. Inaddition to this, 5 insightful workshops have been conducted in Surat, Vapi,Jodhpur, Odisha and Ludhiana clusters to generate maximum awareness among the targetgroup of beneficiaries.
This project will prove to be a boon for the MSME units who have beenwaiting long to switch over the Energy Efficient alternatives.
